Is Jeffrey Lewis just your average anti-folk kinda-punk super intelligent indie-troubadour? Or is he something *truly* unique?
With a brain the size of a small planet thru which neutrinos of popular culture and important information pass through at a zillion miles an hour and stick to the sides, Jeffrey Lewis is an actual phenomenon. Who else can advise you ...Don't let the record label take you out to lunch... (cos every sip of soup is gonna get recouped and they'll call you a cab and put it on your tab) as well as engross you with a mind bendingly fascinating treatise on the Watchmen graphic novel (his university thesis) or treat you to the Complete History of the American Punk Movement, or the history of North Korea- all in about 5 minutes? Try his take on The Fall, or Communism, or Rough Trade Records... it's all Genius...
This is not the first visit to Australia by Jeffrey Lewis, either, having appeared here in solo guise during April 2009 as special guest to fellow troubadour Darren Hanlon. This time however, Jeffrey is bringing The Junkyard with him. Not a literal junkyard... but his two piece bass and drums combo: The Junkyard.
""I knew nothing about opening act Jeffrey Lewis and the Junkyard before the show; it turns out they are pleasantly impossible to define. They are punk-oriented, witty, garage-y, folksy, angst-y, sarcastic and alt-country-ish. There was a bit of the Kimya Dawson-esque talk-singing thing happening; the storytelling was insightful and, at times, sidesplitting. Despite the polarity in styles, it wasn't the clusterfuck it could've been. The normally stoic Congress crowd offered a hearty, congratulatory round of applause at the close of the set. JL&J haven't yet planned their next tour, but I have every intention of being first in line when tickets go on sale." - TUCSON WEEKLY
Jeffrey Lewis is witty, authentic, reverential, and enthusiastic. He is alarmingly self deprecating, I bet he blushes when people praise him... Importantly, he is intelligent and informed. He is also highly entertaining.
Check out Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard live this March. Tickets for the Sydney and Melbourne headline shows are on sale January 22nd. All other shows are on-sale now.
