The 40 years in between is nicely depicted in the change in voice while the energy and craftsmanship is still there in the sound, albeit a little fuller and rounder. I guess, it’s just like us too really… “ – Jeremy Oxley

STEREOLAB

Art-pop pioneers Stereolab return to Australia this March for major events at Melbourne Zoo and Meredith’s Golden Plains Festival as well as headline appearances in Sydney & Fremantle.

The London based group lead by founding members Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier broke their ten year hiatus earlier this year via appearances for Spain’s Primavera Festival and So-Cal’s Desert Daze extravaganza alongside a reissue programme that has seen seven of the band’s ten albums given the deluxe reissue treatment. The ten year break also equalling their time away from Australia when they last appeared in 2009 for the Laneway Festival.

Across their original two-decade run, the French-English combo compiled an astonishing collection of retro-futuristic music, experimenting at the intersection of krautrock, lounge music, French yé-yé pop, and vintage rock ‘n’ roll – like Air if they rocked or Yo La Tengo if they built their music for hipster Parisian discotheque.

“Their hour-and-a-half long set was an expansion trip in its entirety. The band was tight and showcased some serious instrumental talent. Their set ranged from french disco to heavy ’60s inspired psych sounds and the crowd was loving it.” – Mxdwn Desert Daze review

“There’s no new material tonight, and no promises of any new records, but with this amount of energy, and their existing catalogue retaining such relevance and resonance, it’s a joy to have them back.” – Loud & Quiet Primavera review

“Stereolab sound fantastic, locking into grooves that feel both insistent and lissom.” – The Guardian June 2019

Special guests Underground Lovers join Stereolab in Sydney while the propulsive rhythms of Xylouris White support in Fremantle

BILL CALLAHAN

“Intense, spellbinding singer at his deadpan best …Callahan is some kind of genius. Introduce yourself.” – The Guardian

Bill Callahan returns to Australia next March this time carrying a full band and Cretan-Australian duo Xylouris White with him.

The 2020 tour follows successive sold out visits for the Sydney Vivid Festival in 2017 and 2015 plus extra-curricular shows in Melbourne including a sold-out six night at Howler. This time Callahan brings new material following the release earlier this year of Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest – a double album – and his first since the much celebrated Dream River in 2013.

“A long time coming, but well worth the wait, ‘Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest’ is a rich and complex album, layered with beautiful explorations of birth, life and death” – NME

“Shepherd feels like his most something album ever—his warmest, his most generous, possibly his most profound. It is his longest, for sure, lounging comfortably across four sides of vinyl, none of it wasted. It is a high note, fond and deep and sustained.”  Pitchfork

As with the last two visits the lanky Texan will be accompanied by regular touring guitarist Matt Kinsey, his shapes and sounds the perfect compliment to Callahan’s lyrical landscapes while first timers; stand up bassist Brian Beattie and drummer Adam Jones, add the movement and colour.

Adding further depth, Xylouris White; the unlikely combination of Dirty Three drummer and sometime Callahan associate Jim White and Cretan lute playing legend George Xylouris, will join Bill for all east coast headline shows. XW themselves will release a new album The Sisypheans this November.

Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest is available now via Spunk Records
The Sisypheans is released November 8th via ABC Music
