CHIMERS

Like many good bands Chimers are a band born of isolation, not geographically though, via the pandemic.

Irish born Padraic Skehan and his life partner Binx, formed the band in their Wollongong backyard during the initial lockdown of 2020. Veterans and drummers both of the ‘Gong’s vibrant garage-scene – The Pink Fits, The Drop Offs, Evol and more – Chimers is an altogether different beast, Padraic taking a giant leap forward by removing himself from the back-seat and assuming the role of driver; singing, playing guitar and writing the songs that would eventually become their 2021 self-titled debut album.

It’s a sound and album that draws heavily on Skehan’s time as a youth in Ireland and the post-hardcore sounds of Dischord RecordsHusker Du, The Wipers and which has seen the band find friends and favour in like-minds The Mark Of CainHenry RollinsGuy Picciotto and Mudhoney. This is no mere nostalgia though, the band instead landing at the vanguard of a new generation of Sydney and surrounds bands – Body TypeSecond IdolDust, Private WivesR.M.F.C – borrowing from the past in order to create a future.

“Palpable urgency from Chimers… the playing engulfs all in its path” – Triple J

“Visceral and urgent, this combo packs a post-punk punk” –  Gimme Gimme Gimme zine.

“I ordered the Chimers LP, they’re really good!” – Henry Rollins

And although little recognised on its release Chimers is now in its fourth vinyl pressing as the band continue to find friends and influence others as the live shows keep on mounting.

TILMOUTH OXLEY MARSALIS (T> O> M)

Craig Tilmouth was born in Alice Springs and is an Arrernte man. He is a multi-instrumentalist, picking up drums and guitar in his teens and his favourite bands were Iron Maiden, Metallica and The Eagles and great Australian groups Cold Chisel, Sunnyboys, The Angels and Australian Crawl.

Craig played in a number bands around Alice Springs and Adelaide before forming NoKturnl in 1996 with his mate Damien Armstrong. NoKturnl released three EP’s and two albums and toured extensively throughout Europe and Australia. As a songwriter, he has written with Paul Kelly, Mark Seymour and David Bridie. NoKturnl has won several Music Deadly Awards and were also nominated for two Music ARIA Awards.

In 2022, Craig was Music Artist in Residence at Koori Radio and recorded a four track EP on which he played all instruments and sang vocals. On invitation to play a set at Yabun Indigenous Festival in January 2023, Craig asked his mates Pete Oxley and Dave Marsalis if they would like to play the show with him.

The power rock trio played a dangerously good set and they had so much fun they decided to keep the groove going.

Pete Oxley started his musical life with his brother Jeremy in High School bands on the North Coast of NSW. Originally starting out on guitar, he moved to bass when their bands couldn’t find any bass players. Pete moved to Sydney in 1979 to study Architecture and formed Shy Impostors with vocalist Pennie Ward, future Sunnyboys guitarist Richard Burgman and drummer Michael Charles.

In 1980, his brother Jeremy moved to Sydney, and with Pete formed the now legendary Sunnyboys. Sunnyboys had Top 10 hits with songs ‘Alone with You’ and ‘Happy Man’ and their debut album received Gold and Platinum awards for record sales.

Sunnyboys recorded two more studio albums and a live record before disbanding at the end of 1984. In 1985 Pete formed a group with his sister Melanie and pianist Chris Abrahams called Sparklers and recorded numerous singles and an album.

Pete has been playing with song master Ed Kuepper since 2005 and continues to do so. Sunnyboys reformed in 2012 and has played sell out shows for the last 10 years, playing their final shows in 2023. He is really excited about playing with Craig and Dave.

Born in Quebec, enigmatic maestro drummer Dave Marsalis is an Indigenous Métisman.

Dave started drumming at the age of 14 in New Zealand playing dub reggae with a cool band called Dread, Blood and Beat.

He arrived in Australia when he was 20 and immediately fell in with the crowd of jazz funk reggae session musicians playing Kings Cross clubs like Round Midnight and Bourbon and Beefsteak. Word soon got around that there was this deadly young drummer playing the scene.

Spotted by Giant Studio boss and producer Peter Dawkins, Dave was taken on as resident in house session drummer at Giant Studios.

He has worked on sessions with Kevin Borich, Dave Dobbin, Dave Faulkner, Floyd Vincent, Brian Cadd, Munk Ross, Joe Camilleri, Eric Stewart 10cc, Eddie Rayner and many more.

A highlight for Dave was recording and touring with Christine Anu for the album Styling Up. Dave had been helping out in The Koori Radio recording studio when he met Craig Tilmouth.

For Dave, this is not just another session. This is the real thing.

ISAAC ET NORA

Isaac Et Nora
is the project of a French-Korean family featuring Issac, 15 and Nora, 12 alongside their father Nicholas, who have become a viral phenomenon rescuing the spirit of the traditional Latin American song.

What started as a house game and an educational method taught by their parents, has now become a worldwide success with their videos organically accumulate tens of millions of plays and millions of followers in social media.

Their transition to Latin American songs was inspired by Isaac and Nora’s mom’s love of the genre. This ultimately led to their first hit song Veinte Años, which has amassed over 6.5 million views on YouTube. “I think this is a very important date in our lives because everything changed. It changed the way we play music,” Nicolas explains. Afterward, the music family went on to record their first album, Latin & Love Studies, which features songs from different countries in Latin America. Among them are Brazil’s Manha de Carnaval, Colombia’s Arroz con Coco, Cuba’s El Cuarto de Tula, and a Mexican pop song called Hasta la Raíz.

“The truth is, it’s the music, before the lyrics by the author or the meaning of the lyrics, it’s the melody, the rhythm, the ambiance that a song can create. That’s what matters to us.”Nicholas

Following the release of that album in 2021 Isaac Et Nora undertook their first ever tour taking them to sold-out crowds across all of South America.

“People are so kind and benevolent. The concert at Sala Cantoral was incredible, before we came on stage people were already screaming,” Isaac said.

“Although it could be intimidating to play for the first time in all these great Latin American theaters, the public receives us with so much love, it’s reassuring and it gives us strength,” Nora adds.

“Nora carried the audience from before the minute that she walked on stage, in her very pretty velvet knee-length dress and her hair in a ponytail looking very much a 10-year-old. She had the audience eating out of her hand before she opened her voice.” – KNKX.org

And now Isaac Et Nora make their Australian debut and their first concert appearances in an English-first speaking country.

BORIS & KIYOHARU (Japan)

In the ever-expanding universe of sonic exploration, two iconic forces are set to converge in a symphony of innovation and power. Japanese heavy rock pioneers Boris, celebrating an astounding three decades of groundbreaking sound, join forces with J-Rock legend Kiyoharu for the unmissable “Heavy Rock Breakfast” tour, a post-pandemic celebration that promises to redefine the rock experience.

Already announced for the Golden Plains Festival, Boris, known for their relentless pursuit of sonic excellence of heavy rock, returns to Australian shores in 2024. The 4-piece Boris lineup, featuring the dynamic duo Takeshi and Wata, along with the incomparable Atsuo now reclaiming his original front-man role and a support drummer Osamu, promises an electrifying showcase of their evolution and musical prowess. Adding to the anticipation, Boris will headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne, make a triumphant return to Brisbane’s ?hm festival, and mark their first appearances in Adelaide and Perth since 2015.

“Social distance was asked in a Pandemic. Passion of rock was blocked in a social life. Rock is the culture to be handed down to the world once again. The ‘Heavy Rock Breakfast’ show will be to deliver full of our passion for rock straight into the audience.”Boris

Joining Boris at the breakfast table is none other than J-Rock luminary Kiyoharu, making his inaugural voyage to Australia with a 4-piece band. Kiyoharu, a legend in his own right, has left an indelible mark on Japan’s music landscape with his unique blend of hard-rock and traditional sounds. Having achieved monumental success with Kuroyume and Sads, Kiyoharu ** is set to captivate Australian audiences with his charismatic stage presence and unparalleled musical legacy.

“In the world’s eyes, Japan’s rock history remains largely uncharted territory. It’s understandable, amidst the continuous emergence of brilliant music worldwide, there might not be a compelling need to delve into the history of a small Asian nation. However, Japanese music is now starting to exert its influence on the world to some extent. The opportunity to uncover the truth and the deeper layers of Japan’s rock history, deserving of proper recognition, is coming your way. Boris resonates its sound on the foundation of global rock, and, of course, the inheritance of Japanese rock. In this tour, we aim to integrate the history of rock worldwide, alongside the charismatic figure of Japanese rock, Kiyoharu. This tour carries such significance. From this ground, let’s grind, repaint, and update. Stay tuned.”Atsuo / Boris

Boris, often hailed as game-changers in experimental heavy rock, brings their innovative spirit to Australian shores. Their latest release, “Heavy Rocks” (August 2022, Relapse Records), showcases their ability to channel 70s proto-metal vibes into something entirely new and groundbreaking.

Don’t miss the chance to witness the collision of sonic titans Boris and Kiyoharu as they serve up a feast of heavy rock like never before.

CHIMERS

Chimers aren’t even supposed to be here today.

The husband-and-wife garage-rock duo had planned to spend their Friday evening (11 August) celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary – that was until a call came through from one Kim Salmon at the 11th hour seeking a replacement for an ill Penny Ikinger.

As guitarist Pádraic Skehan jokes to the crowd: “Marry someone who’ll say yes to playing with the Beasts of Bourbon!”

It’s yet another feather in the cap of the two-piece, who have been supporting luminaries like Mudhoney, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes and Salmon’s other band The Scientists. More to the point, Chimers’ performances like the one they put on tonight truly put the ‘special’ in ‘with special Guests’.

Constantly on the attack, the mix of dissonant and distorted guitar chug against a driving drum wallop is best described as an unstoppable force hitting an immovable object.

The raw power of tracks like ‘Beasts’, ‘Surrounds’ and ‘Turn Out The Lights’ are only truly comprehended when they’re being blasted directly in your face. You’re left not wondering how they got the gig, but more why they didn’t have it in the first place. Joyeux anniversaire, Chimers.
