CARIBOU

“We’ve been waiting so long to come down to Australia again – it’s been over 7 years since we’ve come down! We’ve been dying to do Meredith in particular for ages – Kieran (Four Tet) has been telling me we have to do it for years.”

Acclaimed Canadian electronic icons Caribou announce their long-awaited return to Australian shores with a string of shows hitting Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast throughout December. Tickets are on-sale at 9AM AEST, Thursday August 25.

Having already been announced as Saturday night headliners for the Meredith Music Festival, Caribou (aka Dan Snaith and pals) have now added a slew of east coast shows to their itinerary. The group will be performing at The Forum in Melbourne on December 11, Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on December 13, The Tivoli in Brisbane on December 15 and The Nightquarter on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on December 16.

It’s the world-renowned dance act’s first Australian visit since 2015, and follows a European summer of major festival appearances including GlastonburyPukkelpop, Lowlands and more, plus upcoming slots at the Hollywood Bowl and NY’s Summer Sound Stage.

We’re so excited about the show we’ve got ready for you – it’s the same full production audiovisual feast that we’ve been melting minds with at European festivals. We’re so thrilled to finally get to play it for amazing Australian audience.”

This tour will see the band performing in support of their 2020 album, Suddenly. Bursting with warmth and Caribou’s trademark technicolour, the album received widespread acclaim upon release from Pitchfork, The Guardian, NME and Stereogum. Featuring nu-soul classic “Home and house anthem “Never Come Back”, the album landed on numerous year-end lists and saw Caribou’s global following reach even greater heights.

On their previous visit seven years ago, Caribou were riding the crest of a wave born of the album Our Love and single “Can’t Do Without You” which dominated clubs, parties, TV shows and advertising that summer, and saw the multi-instrumentalists headlining the electronica stage of the Laneway Festival. In 2015, they were the first contemporary dance act to both perform and sell out the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. Their 2010 album, Swim saw the group achieve breakout success with underground hits “Odezza” and “Sun” and was named the Best Album of 2010 by Resident Advisor. Elsewhere in recent years, Dan Snaith has also released a slew of dancefloor heavers via his side-moniker, Daphni, including Summer 2019’s Sizzling EP.

Don’t miss your chance to catch one of dance music’s most revered live acts in the flesh as Caribou makes their long-awaited return to Australia this December.

ED KUEPPER WITH JIM WHITE

… and so our heroes return; having wowed audiences with their take on 45 years worth of Kuepper catalogue Ed Kuepper ’n Jim White return to finish what they began back in May ’21 and before the world went topsy turvy (again).

Kuepper, of course, is the co-founder of ’70’s proto-punks The Saints, chief architect of the uncompromising Laughing Clowns and The Aints! and master songsmith over some 15+ solo albums, while White is the brilliant drummer of renowned instrumental trio Dirty Three, partner in the genre-defying Xylouris White and disciple of all things Ed.

“…both Kuepper and White standing by the end of the righteous and powerful performance and seemingly as engrossed in the music as the adoring, sold out throng before them. It’s a masterful display by this Brisbane legend and his new musical compatriot, long may Ed’s local reign over us continue.” – Rhythms

“After 90 minutes of watching their linchpins play and improvise together, it was easy to understand why geographical borders mean nothing to music this transcendent.” – AF

Coinciding with the tour(s) has been a trio of retrospective releases from Kuepper including a first ever solo singles collection, a handpicked best of from Kuepper post-Saints outfit Laughing Clowns and a live release from Ed’s very own Saints tribute The Aints!

“Across a rich career that stretches back to the first half of the 1970s, and spans such bands as The Saints, Laughing Clowns, The Aints! and countless solo projects, Kuepper has had a singular ability to reinvent himself and to reinvestigate his own back catalogue from new perspectives.” –
SMH

“I like how Ed Kuepper – like Lou Reed or Bob Dylan – doesn’t want to replay the hits as was and at the same time doesn’t pretend to not have a  past nor a future. In working with the musicians they play with, they revisit their material in new and old ways as well as creating new material and its not a binary problem, an ethic that seems relevant to all things to me.” – Jim White

ED KUEPPER

With his largely sold out national tour (featuring drummer and Rising Artist in Residence Jim White) behind him, Ed Kuepper returns to home base this July and a weekly solo residency in Brisbane venue It’s Still A Secret.

Herr Kuepper will take to the stage every Wednesday at 8.00pm for approx. two hours in a show he has dubbed

Still Nights
Four Evenings of Reflection, Improvisations, Old and New Songs.
July 6, 13, 20 & 27

Nothing is off limits as the two times ARIA Hall Of Fame inductee covers material from a majestic 45 year career.

Tickets for all shows are on-sale 11am Wednesday 22nd June.

THE MARK OF CAIN

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TENSION TOUR- ENCORE!

The Mark Of Cain – the band dubbed least likely in their high school year book – return this August in celebration of being the South Australian Music Awards most recent inductee into the SA Music Hall Of Fame.

Comprised of brothers John Scott (vocals and guitar), Kim Scott (bass) and current and 11th drummer Eli Green, The Mark Of Cain have released five albums in their 35 year history including 1989’s debut Battlesick, 1996’s breakthrough Ill At Ease album (included radio hits First Time, LMA) and most recent release Songs Of the Third & Fifth (2012) featuring former Helmet and current Battles and Tomahawk drummer John Stanier.

Along the way TMOC have also achieved a series of first including being the first Australian band to work with legendary producer Steve Albini (Big Black, Nirvana, Page & Plant), the first Australian rock act to crossover into the dance market via their ground breaking work with local DJ / producer Paul Mac (a move later adopted by silverchair among others) and remain the only Australian act to be produced by former Black Flag frontman and US spoken word performer Henry Rollins. They have appeared in the soundtrack to movies Idiot Box (Degenerate Boy), various surf and skate films and had their track The Contender used as the exit music for contestants on TV show Big Brother.

It’s a remarkable achievement, unique, and all done without ever having relocated from their home city of Adelaide.

“This is much appreciated, it also addresses a common misgiving from our fans that we should have more recognition (our fans are always right you know) and although for ourselves, we’ve never been a band that seeks attention, we were always proud to be a band from Adelaide that could tour other states and show that Adelaide can and does produce great independent music and we have never compromised on that vision or belief. So we take it as a great honour for this recognition and invitation from SAMIA.” – John Scott

SUNNYBOYS

THE RETURN OF THE FAB-FOUR!

In these times of floods and pandemic and gruelling election speak, there can be only one remedy: rock ’n roll! And who better to deliver that than Sunnyboys.

The fab four of Jeremy, Richard, Pete and Bil will emerge from the gloom to deliver a handful of low fuss, no frills, hi-energy rock ’n roll across a three states this winter, reminding us of better days and sunnier times to come.

“Closing the main set with I’m Shakin’, Sunnyboys left everything they had on the stage, pushing themselves to the limits even coming out onto the front speaker stacks for a shred.” gclive.me

“The Sunnyboys were meant to be heard live and their re-emergence was the greatest thing to happen in Australian music since Wave Aid (benefit concert for the Asian Tsunami).” – Weekend Notes.

“There’s so much love and respect in the room its quite remarkable, and the four-piece return the favour with Love To Rule and the irrepressible Tunnel Of Love preceding the first true banger Happy Man, which prompts the euphoric crowd into a singalong frenzy from the very first note.” – The Music

When they last toured in 2020 Sunnyboys chose the salubrious surrounds of Taronga Zoo, Melbourne’s Forum, Brisbane’s Tivoli; this time though, the band will get down and sweaty playing intimate venues more akin to their breakout year of 1981. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Melbourne pop-rockers Even will join the fun in Sydney and Melbourne while former Screaming Tribesmen Mick Medew & Michael Charles will bring their Mesmerisers to Brisbane and Byron Bay.

Get up front and personal this winter with Sunnyboys. Tickets on-sale 11am Friday May 6th.

JIM WHITE & MARISA ANDERSON

Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions and improvisations based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music, re-imagining the landscape of American music.

In the last 15 years alone she has appeared on, collaborated with or released upwards of ten (10) albums including The Quickening, a duo release with drummer Jim White

The idea of a collaboration between the two developed while on the road together in 2015, Anderson playing solo and White playing with Xylouris White. The Quickening began in late 2018, where the duo initially agreed to meet in Portland OR to improvise and record. Happy with the initial recordings, the duo headed to Mexico City and into Estudios Noviembres, a time capsule of a studio from the 70’s that had been largely closed before some young engineers took it over. The “slight disorientation” of working in less familiar environments mirrored their willingness to plunge headfirst into exploring new sonic territory together. Anderson purchased a new nylon string Ramos-Castillo guitar from a Mexican luthier just ahead of recording which leant to the spontaneity of “The Lucky” and “The Quickening”. The duo did not rehearse or perform together prior to the recording sessions; as White puts it, “it’s good to suspend disbelief”

“To listen to any free improvised music is to hear another world, speaking its own spontaneous language. The Quickening comes from a place very nearby our own, now lost, but recoverable by listening.” – Pitchfork

“The Quickening… captures two masters at their most free.” – Exclaim

Australia marks the live debut for these two pioneers. Shows this special don’t come our way very often. Don’t you dare miss it.
